Prescription glasses prices in Douala: what you pay for

The price of a pair of prescription glasses is three things added together: the frame, the lenses, and any coatings on the lenses. At Jackson Eye Clinic in Douala, frames run from 5,000 to 50,000 FCFA. The lens price depends on your prescription, so you get it as a quote before you order anything.

The price of glasses has three parts

  • The frame: the part you choose, and the easiest price to compare from one shop to the next.
  • The lenses: the part your prescription decides. They are what actually corrects your sight.
  • The coatings: extras added to the lenses, such as anti-reflective or a tint that darkens in the sun.

That holds in Douala as it does anywhere: every pair of prescription glasses is those three lines added up. When a price sounds surprisingly low or surprisingly high, ask which of the three has changed.

Most of us spend twenty minutes choosing the frame and twenty seconds discussing the lenses. Yet the lenses are what you will be looking through at everything else.

How much does a frame cost?

At Jackson Eye Clinic, frames run from 5,000 to 50,000 FCFA, cheapest to dearest. That is the range we publish.

The gap mostly comes down to material and finish. A dearer frame does not make you see better: it may sit lighter on your nose or be better finished, nothing more. It is a matter of taste, comfort and budget.

The mirror at the clinic, on the other hand, is free. Try on as many frames as you like. It never gets tired.

Why the lens price differs from one person to the next

Because lenses are prepared for your prescription, not for the frame. Two people who pick the same frame can leave with two different totals.

Three things count: the type of lens, the strength of the correction, and the coatings you choose. A single vision lens corrects one distance. A bifocal or a progressive lens corrects several in the same lens.

This is why we do not publish lens prices: one figure would be wrong for almost everybody. A lens is like a suit from the tailor. Nobody can tell you the price before taking your measurements.

Coatings are options, not obligations

  • Anti-reflective: cuts reflections on the lens, from headlights or a screen for example.
  • Blue-light filter: filters part of the blue light given off by screens.
  • Photochromic: the lens darkens in sunlight and clears again indoors.
  • Prescription sun: a tinted lens prepared with your correction.

Each coating adds to the lens price. None is required to see clearly: your correction does that job. Ask which ones suit your days, and have the quote worked out with and without them.

A good quote reads like a restaurant bill: every line is written down, and you can skip dessert without anyone taking offence.

Are glasses worth the money?

Yes, according to the World Health Organization (WHO): correcting sight with glasses is among the most cost-effective health interventions there are. And yet, the WHO also reports, in low-income countries two thirds of the people who need glasses do not have them.

One more reason to know the price before you commit. A clear quote lets you pick a frame that fits your budget and keep the bulk of it for the lenses, which do the real work. The most expensive glasses are still the ones asleep in their case.

This article is general information. It does not replace an examination: only an examination shows what correction you need, and therefore which lenses.

Common questions about the price of glasses

How much do prescription glasses cost in Douala? It depends on the frame, the lenses and the coatings. At Jackson Eye Clinic, frames run from 5,000 to 50,000 FCFA and the lens price is given as a quote, based on your prescription.

Why is the lens price not displayed? Because it changes with every prescription. A quote based on your own correction is fairer than an average figure.

Does insurance pay for glasses? The clinic accepts ACTIVA insurance. What is covered depends on your policy, so check with your insurer.

How long do the glasses take? In most cases, the same day: the lenses are prepared on site at the clinic.
